Author: Brian Azzarello, art by Lee Bermejo
Genre: Graphic Novel, crime
Part of a series? A standalone from the Batman Universe
How it happened is anyone’s guess, but Joker has been released from Arkham Asylum having been deemed “sane”. Upon release, he finds that there is work to do. Jonny Frost, our narrator, picks him up. Even though he’s a fairly low level thug, Joker likes him and he ends up driving him on his… errands.
No one ever thought Joker would be released, so his empire has been split up between many people. You see a lot of low level bosses, and some names you will recognize. In the name of reclaiming Gotham, Joker’s out on a killing spree and no one is completely safe.
My thoughts: the plot here was subpar, even for the comic world where they take a few books to build sometimes. While the art is truly something, the actual story reads like fan fiction gone wrong. You can almost hear some one in their room going ” I want more stories with the Joker. What if he got out of Arkham and killed people?” Now, fan fiction is often great- a fun and exciting way to test your skills and work with a character you love. The author gets to have their favorite character in the palm of their hand, and so long as they respect the original author’s vision this can be fantastic for readers that just want more. I have read some that I really love. Sadly, it can also go very wrong. So I have to give this one a two star review. The art is great, but the plot just isn’t there.
Due to the violence in this book I would rate it rather heavy on the adult content scale. He is the king of mayhem, after all. A seven.
The book is out, let me know what you think.
