Dr. Nic Joshi lost everything two years ago when his wife, Jen, was murdered in front of him. Now as the lead doctor of a cruise ship, he mostly drinks himself stupid and coasts through life. When a woman comes to him on the boat, claiming to have Jen’s heart- literally as she was a transplant patient- it all seems too surreal. She wants Nic’s help. She knows what Jen was working the police on- the uncovering of a black market organ transplant ring. She needs the evidence and swears Jen told her that Nic was the key to finding it.
The woman, Jess, has lived a hard life. With the life of her son on the line, she will say and do anything to get what the bad guys want. As the two spend time together, though, she begins to see another side of Nic. Broken as he is, he can’t stand her pain. He tries time and again to help and heal her. The two go back to Nic’s home together to find the evidence. Along the way they begin to trust, to care, and to share their painful stories. When it is time, though, can Jess risk the life of her child on a hunch that this man might understand and help? Betrayal is imminent. How far can she go, though, and still live with herself? Can she keep her son safe?
I loved this book. It broke me, again and again. I was a wreck. My heart ached for these very hurt, very real characters. I wanted for them to find peace. I worried for them. To me this is the mark of an exceptional writer- the ability to make that character your reader’s everything… even if only for a moment. The plot was interesting and fast paced, and I loved the little bits of culture mixed in. I also liked the snippets we got from Jen. All in all, a superb read. I honestly have no negative comments.
As far as the adult content scale goes- a nine. Sexual content- both consensual and rape, language, alchohol, child endangerment and a host of other heavy hitting topics that I would not want my teen niece getting into.
The book comes out 9-27-16. Be ready.
