Zoe’s parents are worried about her. They say she isn’t dealing well… where as she thinks she’s fine. Nowhere is a place, and she’s fine there with no feelings. They want more, and thus Zoe finds herself at Camp Padua- a summer camp for at risk teens. At first she thinks she has nothing in common with her fellow campers. Cassie, is a manic-depressant- bipolar-anorexic. Grover Cleveland knows he will one day be schizophrenic, and is getting ready, but for now he is PC (pre-crazy). Bek, (Alex Trebek, if he can be believed) is a pathological liar. Then you have a bulimic girl, a cutter, and a bunch of camp leaders with their own issues.
As she grows to know these people, she begins to care again. Especially about Cassie and Grover. Zoe begins to open herself up again, to talk about what happened to her sister and how it effected her, and, finally, to heal. Can she heal herself, please her family, and hold on to her friends? It’s going to be a hell of a summer…
I first learned of this book from Netgalley, but was too late to request. I was thrilled to see this on the Kindle First page- honestly I didn’t even look at the other books I was so desperate for this one. The cover drew me first, then the premise. The characters kept me enthralled, rooting for them and loving them- even Cassie, which is very hard some times. I loved watching each of them grow! At the head of each chapter is a letter home from one of the characters, which I really liked (I will warn you that one of them writes mostly in French but I was able to get the gist). All in all, I loved the book!
On the adult content scale, there is a lot of swearing. Also, many of the camper’s issues are very, very, hard hitting. This is one that I would hand to my niece, but only if there was a promised discussion of feelings after because not all of it is pretty. There is a large amount of humor to level out the levity though, and the book doesn’t glamourize any of the camper’s issues. I would give it a six.
The book comes out in just a few weeks (12-01-2016). Don’t miss this one- in fact, if you don’t have your kindle first book, grab it there for $1.99 and read it now. ( Going to the link below ought to offer you the Kindle First price, but if not just google “kindle first” and it will take you to this month’s choices.)
